A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources. Though often caused by nature, disasters can have human origins. A specific disaster may spawn a secondary disaster that increases the impact. A classic example is an earthquake that causes a tsunami, resulting in coastal flooding.

Disaster is a multifarious phenomenon which causes huge loss for mankind and it is also critical area to intervene. The effect of disaster is worst in developing countries. Disaster is a very sensitive issue which demand high dedication and sometime immediate action. As an organization SSK values each individual and sensitive regarding ensuring their lives and disaster is such a calamity which bring question on basic human rights like- food, cloth or shelter. So SSK is highly interested in reaching out larger disaster affected population to ensure their basic rights.

Disaster (especially flood) has been an important theme on which SSK has intensively worked. The main objective of its intervention is to fill the gap of necessary knowledge and resources for better coordination and implementation of disaster management and relief work by various government, non-government institutions and it also aims to create an environment where information is exchanged freely during complex emergency situations and disaster by various Government, non-government and public bodies. Besides this, the SSK also addresses disaster management in a complete and integrated manner through field level interventions. It has taken various initiatives for mainstreaming disaster Management with development and community preparation in Uttar Pradesh during past few years.

Some of the major projects carried out under the theme:

  • Strengthening of flood resilience of communities in vulnerable areas in Bahraich and Barabanki districts of Uttar Pradesh
  • Strengthening of flood resilience of communities in Saharsa District of Bihar under Cross-Border Flood Resilience Project for Koshi-River Basin.
