Migration Information Centre Program in Mirzapur (Supported by UNDP)

There are over 200 million migrants in India (NSS). An analysis of the Census 2001 data indicates that during 1991-2001, about 61 per cent migrants moved within the districts, 24 per cent within the states and 13 per cent inter-state. Migration is seen as an independent individual risk factor for HIV in a wide range of settings. Migrants may face exploitation, harassment (including sexual), poverty, low status, disempowerment, segregation, isolation, job insecurity, stress (mental and physical), gender imbalances, increased alcohol consumption and discrimination.
Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh is badly hit by the problems of migration. Hundreds of people migrate every year to different places in search of livelihood and provide better living to their family. But, they themselves become vulnerable to different situation and diseases like HIV/AIDS.

About Program

SSK endeavour to address these social issues and problems through the support of UNDP since May 2009 in 5 Gram Panchayat (one Masari G.P intensively and 4 others extensively) of Mirzapur.Masari is chosen for it is the most migration prone G.P which came during the discussion in the meeting represented by Citizen Leaders and Elected Representatives.
