STRENGTHENING RURAL GOVERNANCE
Promoting Education of Minority women and girls through Community Led Agents
Capacity Building of Community Change Agents
First phase training of community change agents was carried out from 7th to 12th February, 2011 at SSK, Lucknow. The training was based on Society and Social Change process.
The objective of the training was:
To enable community change agents to understand the society and societal change process.
To enable community change agents to develop perspective on developmental process and understand their in social change.
In the six days training, 18 CCAs developed their understanding on various issues of society; and learn some English speaking, they openly given their views on each matter. It was the first time for these individuals they involve this kind of guidance and come out from their community. They excitedly participated in each activity in the training. The method used in the training was group activity and discussion, presentation, documentary movie and social issues based movie and its analysis.
Opening of Training Centre for Adolescent Girls at Village level
As a component of the mission, during the rapid assessment we found a huge mass of adolescent who are drop out in our intervened area. They are engaged in household work and want to do something for generating income and for further education. An initiative is taken for these adolescent girls at community level. The vocational training is started from 17th February, 2011 at village Resource center of Bhavanipur Gram panchayat of Cholapur Block. In this batch 25 adolescent girls from Gadsara and Bhavanipur Gram Panchayats are identified in which 95% are drop out and have education till 8th standard. Ms. Babita Singh, a technical person is supporting the girls to improve skills of embroidery.
Starting of Vocational Training at Vanita Polytechnic
To exploring the vocational opportunities for the adolescent girls a technical training started at Vanita polytechnic, Lahurabeer for 17 adolescent girls from February, 2011. This is the first batch in which girls occupied from 5 Gram panchayats. A vehicle arranged for these girls who are receiving the girls from their respective gram panchayats and drop after the training. The trades chosen in this batch are Beautician, Jardoji, Sewing and Cutting and Machine embroidery.
Conducting Citizen Report Card Survey on School Sanitation
A survey on school sanitation of 10 Gram panchayats of Cholapur Block was conducted in this month. The four stakeholders has been undertaken for this survey in which PRIs members, teacher, guardian and students from 4th to 8th standard. In this survey primary school, middle school and intermediate college was visited where data collected by primary and secondary sources. The basic information about mid day meal, school campus sanitation, toilet sanitation, was included. In this survey drinking water facility and its purity also checked in the surveyed schools of 10 gram panchayats. The baseline data also collected in which population, revenue village population also accumulated.
Meeting with Adolescent Girls
The meeting with adolescent was organized on 9th to 11th February, 2011 at Bhavanipur and Gadsara Gram Panchayats. The agenda of the meeting was to form their collectives and know their interest and background. About 50 girls are participated in the meeting. On the basis of girl’s interest and need the girls are encouraged for vocational training. In the meeting the 70% girls was drop out, they have discontinued their study due to economical and social problems.
FIELD EXPERIMENTATION
Reducing Vulnerability of Migrants Workers, Sitapur (Source End)
PRI Involvement
Orientation program for a day was arranged with Pradhan and BDC members of targeted Panchayats. The objective was to sensitize the Panchayats about their roles and responsibilities towards their respective Panchayats and also on migration issue. In this regard, the movie (SWARAJ) was shown to them and they watched the movie with enthusiasm. The film motivated them a lot. Discussion was held on the migration issue. In the program, it was shared that Pradhan can maintain a database of migration information. The database will contain the migrant's destination information, their skills, mobile numbers etc.
Vocational Training/ Youth Mobilization
The monthly meeting of the Kamyabi club was organized at Shramik Sahayata Kendra. Youth are working as a next cadre of Community Change agent in the target area. They helped to disseminate the information. The new vocation group is identified which requires training on mobile repair. For this, a local level vocational institute has been identified named as GRASS Academy. The list of the trainees is also prepared. There is a huge demand of Mobile repair training in the market. The youth club actively participated to inform the other youth for the said training.
Prawasi Pariwar Samuha
Regular monthly meetings of the collectives are organized. Mobilization meeting was organized at Mulahimpur for new collective formation. One new collective is formed at Akbarpur Khurd. The group of Karim Nagar raised their voice and gave pressure to Pradhan regarding Job card giving priority to migrant families and succeded. One of the migrants from Laddopur faced difficulty in getting signatures of Pradhan for the Registration of migrants. As Pradhan was refusing to proof it, then the Women collective of the respective villages pressurised to make him understand the benefit of the card for migrants and at last he signed the form. Two days orientation program was organized at Shramik Sahayata Kendra on migration issue. Now in the community these groups works as a resource group which helps to disseminate information regarding Shramik Sahayata Kendra services.
Legal Counselling
Khairabad Samajik Vikas Prerak Manch started dealing with legal issues. Every 3rd Saturday of each month is fixed to deal with legal issues. In this month, 2 legal issues were identified and the federation started to work on that. The federation started to do follow-up of the already identified cases.
Develop IEC materials
Developed pamphlets on benefits of Prawasi Pariwar Samuha.
Posters on labour working hours and benefits of Migrant Identity Cards.
Developed brochure on services of Shramik Sahayata Kendra.
Reducing Vulnerability of Migrants Workers, Ghaziabad (Destination End)
Resource Group
At destination end, the resource group is formed with experts. The group constitutes well known academic persons, NGOs persons, social activist etc. In this group, the first meeting was conducted and the action plan for the next month was formulated. The main focus of the meeting was on project overview, experience of source-end and also works together for the Health camp to be organized on April. To organize health camp, the strategy was discussed and a draft agenda has been prepared for the next month meeting.
 Mobilization meeting with Migrants
Contacts were made with the migrants of Lohamandi and Sitapur group. Shramik Sahayata Kendra services was shared with the group.
Networking and Liaison
Liaison has been made with CITU at destination end to work together in future for wall writing, on advocacy point etc. In the meeting, it was decided that the wall writing work will be done together which is going to start from March.

Capacity Building and training of Elected Representative and Functionaries of PRIs
Training Need Assessment(TNA) Exercise of PRIs
TNA exercise was carried out in 6 units at partner organizations of Jaunpur. Name of them are :- Sushrusha Samiti, Jaunpur, Gramanchal Sewa Samiti, Ramnagar, Sushrusha Samiti Barsatthi, Janak Samiti Rampur, Vivekanand Gramin Vikas and Sanskritik Samiti, Abholi, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Janak Samiti Barsatthi. Objective of this exercise was to understand the learning needs of elected representatives, particularly women and dalit. The exercise was based on the awareness of local self governance and village situation. From each unit, 20 representatives were analyzed where 16 ward members were undertaken for this exercise.
PRIs Strengthening and Women Empowerment Programme
One Day orientation of PRIs Members
Orientation for a day of elected representatives of PRIs of 5 gram panchayat named of Cholapur and Harahua Block was organized at Panchayat Bhavan of respective Gram Panchayats. Objective of the orientation was to learn about elected representatives and sensitize them with new vigor, new content and knowledge so that they could be able to handle the responsibilities efficiently and with confidence. In these orientation 89 elected representatives actively participated which included females also.
Information Dissemination through Wall Writing
With the intensive approach, SSK staff members displayed the concrete dissemination of message on Panchyat Samitiis with help of Wall writing and painting. It was completed at Udaipur and Chandapur Gram Panchayats. With the help of Wall-Paintings and writing, SSK tried to make people aware of Panchayats. Wall painting illustrated major roles of panchayats samities.
TRAININGS
Training of Trainers on Participatory Training
SSK conducted two consecutive TOTs on participatory training between 2nd to 9th February & 14th to 21st February which was attended by 52 trainees (26 in each batch) from JEEViKA (BRLPS), Bihar.
By the end of the training, participants learned and internalized about the concept of participatory training, analyzing training needs, understanding appropriate participatory training methods, tools, techniques, understanding group processes, improving self and personality of a trainer, different roles a trainer has to play during participatory training, designing effective participatory training and its various steps, learning facilitate participatory training sessions and understanding Trainer Team.
DISASTER MANAGEMENT RESOURCE CENTRE
Capacity Building on DRR
A five days orientation training programme was organized on community based disaster risk reduction (DRR) from January 31, 2011 till February 4, 2011 at SSK training centre, Lucknow. The curriculum covered conceptual clarity on disasters, its types, causes and consequences; community based disaster risk reduction process and planning; conduct of participatory vulnerability and capacity assessment using PRA tools; developmental approach to DRR and mainstreaming DRR in WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene). Dr. Ajay Kumar from Bihar and Mr. Binoy Acharya and Mr. Kireet Parmar from UNNATI, Gujarat were the resource persons for the training. The sessions on mainstreaming DRR in WASH were facilitated by Mr. Santosh Kumar Singh from SSK itself. Total 16 participants, including the staff members from disaster management resource centre and other units of SSK, participated in the training.
Training to PGSS Gorakhpur on CMDRR Planning
As a resource centre, the Disaster Management Resource Centre of SSK did the capacity building of staff members of Poorvanchal Gramin Seva Samiti, Gorakhpur on community managed disaster risk reduction planning and assessment. Two DMRC staff members from SSK went to Gorakhpur as resource persons and facilitated this 5 days training programme which included the classroom sessions as well as field based practice sessions. The training was provided to the staff members of PGSS to enable them to work on the issue of CMDRR in a more organized manner.
Orientation for newly elected panchayat representatives
The ongoing orientations for newly elected panchayat representatives included 3 orientations in the month of February. Orientation on the issue of local self governance, was organized in Matrepur, Kandauli and Kohli panchayat of Kaisarganj block of Bahraich district. The pradhans and other panchayat representatives were oriented on the concept of local self governance, roles and responsibilities of pradhans (village head) and panchs (panchayat representatives) and panchayat committees. The duration of all the 3 trainings was one day. 11 representatives participated in the training in Kohli panchayat, 11 participated in the training in Kandauli panchayat and 13 representatives participated in the training in Matrepur.
Orientation on NREGA and RTI

One day orientation was organized for the panchayat representatives on NREGA and RTI in Ahata gram panchayat of Jarwal block in Bahraich on February 10, 2011. The orientation was organized on the special demand of panchayat representatives made during the orientation on the panchayati raj.

Muslim and Dalit Girls Education and Women Empowerment Programme
Rural Window: Bell Bajao to prevent domestic violence
The "Bell Bajao" Campaign is a nobel concept to create awareness among the common man regarding domestic Violence that breaks homes, torture women and ultimately causes deaths. It was launched on 21 Jan,2011 in Varanasi with the help of Breakthrough. Video van is used for implementation of operation. Campaign moved to Cholapur block on 3rd- 4th Feb, 2011 & 7th- 8th Feb,2011 in 10 Gram Panchayats. The objective of this campaign is to sensitize the community against domestic violence and aware them for PWDVA act. SSK is organizing activities like, signature campaign, cycle rally and community meeting with this campaign. The uniqueness about the campaign is that it calls men to intervene whenever they learn domestic violence being perpetrated behind closed doors.
Exploring Opportunities for SHG Group
Meeting with SHG was organized between 14 - 21 Feb, 2011, SHGs were Garima and Radhika SHG of Dhurahara to strengthen the SHG by exploring the opportunities for SHG at Cholapur Village Resource Centre and Dhurahara VRC. The objective of the meeting was to provide a platform to SHGs to explore opportunities with the help of inter loaning of money within the group members. There were 28 women participants in the meeting. There knowledge was enhanced about how to save money. At the same time, group wrote a letter to bank for providing passbook and bank statement from 4th Mar, 2010 till 31st Jan, 2011.
Interface with Guardians Meeting
Guardian meeting was organized on 19 Feb, 2011, 23 Feb 2011 and 24 Feb 2011 for the girls enrolled in Vidya Gyan Scholarship Programme. Meeting was conducted in Aditya Narayan Public School, Cholapur and Dhurahara VRC where about 126 guardian and girls participated. During the meeting, SSK shared with the parents about the scholarship amount, information and the observation of computer test. SSK also shared next 3 months course content of Computer classes i.e. photo-shop and Hindi Typing on computer. At the same time, we also shared information related to govt. schemes for minor community students and had discussion on school sanitation issue.
Progress Evaluation Of Computer Classes Of IXth standard students
After 6 months computer coaching classes, for analysing the progress of girls, SSK organized computer test which included three sessions:
Theory paper of 30 marks
Practical session of 40 marks
Verbal on fundamentals of computer of 30 marks which included MS DOS, MS Paint, MS Word, MS Powerpoint and Basic Excel.
After evaluation of test it was found, that 70% students got satisfactory result of understanding of basic computer. It was observerd that students have interest in learning computer and they want to learn computer for atleast one year.
